He previously served six years as the principal of his own law firm, where he concentrated on white collar criminal and selected civil litigation. During that time, he earned the Illinois Super Lawyer distinction. James Shapiro was also partner at Shapiro & Schwartz, and he worked with several other Chicago law firms.

He also spent five years as a mediator and arbitrator with Resolute Systems, where he mediated and arbitrated cases involving personal injury, employment discrimination, products liability, premises liability, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination. He was an expert witness for multiple cases, and he served as an adjunct professor at The John Marshall Law School and Loyola University School of Law.

Complementing his wide-ranging legal experience, he holds a juris doctor from the College of William and Mary and bachelor of arts in history and philosophy from Trinity College. He's a member of the Illinois Judges Association, Chicago Council of Lawyers, and former director of the Alliance of Illinois Judges.
